Is Corfu Greece worth visiting ? A Photographers perspective & Travel Guide

Porto Timoni

From UNESCO listed Old towns, Coves , cliffs , turquoise water and olive grove countrysides Corfu has it all. I will cover the pros and cons we came across of the island of Corfu. I will cover the best photography locations , our favorite beaches , how to get there and where to stay.

How to get there

Mostly everyone arrives by ferry or airplane. The easiest route will be flying and the most scenic will be the ferry. There is no direct flight from the United States if you are coming from there. The most common routes being:

  • U.S to Athens

  • U.S to London to Corfu

  • U.S to Rome to Corfu

Flights ranging from 12- 16 hours total.

Ferry routes

When you arrive in Athens you will be a short 1 to 1.5 hour ride away from Corfu. There are multiple ferries that depart every day and the option for a pedestrian ticket or bringing your own car ticket. Luggage included in fair.

Pedestrian only : $14 USD - $16 USD one way

Driver and Car : $43 USD - $54 USD one way

Porto Timoni

The trailhead of Porto Timoni offers an array of activities. You first walk through the village to find small shops and local food to enjoy. There are trails leading down to the famous double sided coast. To get the signature shot, about halfway down you will see a look out point. You can also stay until sunset to see stunning views of the coastline. (Refer to the photo on the top of the blog to see the signature shot !)

Corfu Old Town & Beach

There are not many places in the world where you can walk through a 8th century BC town and stumble upon a beach right next to it. Beautiful water and mountains surround the area offering insane backdrops for photos. This fortified city has been under different foreign rulers making it a melting pot of history, cuisine and architecture.

Ghost Village ( Old peritheia )

Corfus oldest town still stands but only abandoned. Mansions of once was are now empty and waiting to be explored. Located in Mount Pantokrator you will find this ancient 14th century village that was specifically designed to ward off pirate attacks. The village has views of the Ionian Sea and dense forest. You can also see dates etched into the stone that can even go back to 1200. This rare half standing village is defiantly a stopping point for the lovers of history. Even though most of the village is empty you can still find small shops selling honey and food.

Watch the planes take off

This was a cool experience to see the planes take off and land over the ocean. If you go to the Vlacherna Monastery walkway you can see the dramatic view of the planes. They come and go about every 5 minutes so you will definitely get a close up view for a great photograph. You can check out the Corfu Airline Website to check for arrivals.

La Grotta

This location is a bit of a party vibe. They play loud music and there is a bar and restaurant. Although we weren't big fans of the food, prices and loud music we defiantly enjoyed the scenery and beautiful water. You will walk down a staircase to access the free beach so make sure you are able to walk up and down stairs. You can find parking along the main road outside and we found it to be free as well. You can snorkel and have the option to cliff dive and jump from a diving board.

Donkey Sanctuary

This Free donkey sanctuary is open to the public every day from 10 am - 5pm. Since 2004 they have been rescuing abused and abandoned donkeys. Over the years they have housed about 500 donkeys. Donations are welcomed, all proceeds continue to help the local animals. You will find lots of barn cats keeping the donkeys company. You will most likely spend about an hour here and it 20km from corfu town.
